MUSIC GENRE ANALYSIS

The genre of music I have decided to base my video on is pop. Choosing Little Mix's song Dear Lover was an easy choice as pop is a favourite genre of mine and Little Mix's music fits into the stereotypes. Pop music, short for Popular music, originated in it's modern form in the United States and United Kingdom during the 1950's. The term 'popular music' usually describes the favoured songs among a mist of genres. Although pop music is commonly seen as the music in the charts, it also creates a whole new genre for itself as it incoporates styles such as urban, dance, country and rock. However some core elements to pop include repeated choruses, melodic tunes and hooks (musical ideas added to pop songs to make it appealing e.g. Single Ladies by Beyonce is iconic as the song and video are easily recognisable). Pop is a very broad genre with lots of sub-genres such as Bubblegum pop, Indie pop and Pop rap. An example of a band who suit the pop genre very well are One Direction as their boyband charm makes them automatically loved and adored by their fans. Furthermore, their singles which include 'What Makes You Beautiful' and 'Best Song Ever' fall into the elements of a typical pop song as they have catchy choruses and elemplary videos and lyrics which makes them memorable.

Pop music originated from the genre of Rock and Roll in the 1950's. Since the late 1950's pop has had the more special name of non-classical music and is also referred to as chart music. Some of the most well-known pop artists around today are; Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes, One Direction, Katy Perry, Ariana Grande, Pink and Beyonce.

It can be argued that Pop is the broadest genre within the music industry as what is in pop music can vary from Rap to Country and Jazz to Hip-hop. This may be a reason as to why it is so favoured.

What are the conventions of Pop videos?

In the typical pop video, there may be great connection between the lyrics and the video. For example, in Katy Perry's music video for Roar she is in a jungle amongst the animals which is relevant to the lyrics of the song based around the noises these animals may make. This suggests that the video is quite relevant to a general pop song and fits in well with the theme. Having this link could help the audience find out what the song is about in greater detail because they may not have had this opportunity from just listening to the lyrics.

The video also tends to fit the characteristics of the genre as there is bright lighting to reflect a cheerful mood. Everything in the shot is light and colourful which appeals to the audience who are mostly young people as they like the vibrant colours and schemes on the artist's outfits. This makes the whole scene seem positive which fits the message of the song.

The characters in the video are often young as the youthful audience want to look up to the artist anf aspire to be like them, making them more relatable if they are of a similar age.
